Huber: Kelly's Support for Bailouts is Bad Policy (May 6, 2010)

This morning in a debate hosted on WJET-Radio’s “Erie Talk in the Morning,” between the six candidates running for the Republican nomination in the 3rd Congressional District, Mike Kelly voiced his support for the TARP bill, commonly referred to as the “Wall Street Bailout.”

Kelly acknowledged that his support for the Wall Street bailout was a distinction between himself and the other five candidates when a follow-up query was asked by the debate moderator.

Paul Huber, Republican candidate for Congress, said, “I strongly opposed the failed Wall Street bailout because Congress used hardworking taxpayers’ money to reward those who played Las Vegas style capitalism.  This $750 billion bailout further increased the national debt and put more money on the credit card bill that our children and grandchildren will have to pay.

“Congress told us that the Wall Street bailout would free up credit for small businesses in America, but it didn’t.  It has become nothing more than a slush fund for Congress and the Obama administration.  That is why one of the first pieces of legislation I will offer in Congress will be to repeal both the Wall Street bailout and the stimulus bill and use unspent money to pay down the national debt.

“Mike Kelly’s support for the Wall Street bailout is yet another example of his ‘tax and bailout’ mentality.  As a member of the Butler City Council, he voted for higher taxes and last year he personally benefitted from the federal government’s Cash for Clunkers bailout.  At least he’s being consistent.”
